My good friend Charlie told me several years ago he wanted me to build him a chess table, but I could never find a good time to start on it. Well this summer, I finally made some time for him.
Charlie sent me links to 3 different tables, wanting certain things from all 3 tables combined into one. After several revisions, we finally settled on what you see here.
This was no small project. I cut the cabriole legs my self on the bandsaw, and used rasps and files to smooth things out. The chessboard itself has over 10 hours of glue up & sanding in it.
The entire table is built from solid Cherry, and the chess board is Walnut & Birdseye Maple. The heringbone inlay banding around the chessboard is made from Walnut & Maple by Matt @ inlaybanding.com. The hand-rubbed Victorial style bail pull on the front drawer is from houseofantiquehardware.com.
The table top has over 7 coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Urethane top-coat buffed to a mirror shine.
And just like Charlie, this table has a little "magic" of its own!
